Users are notified of content revisions or additions instantly, empowering sales people to locate and distribute the most effective content to customers.
Dognition is an innovative web application focused on helping dog owners uncover their canine's cognition through a series of science-based games. In addition to allowing owners increased insight to their pup's thought processes it gives dogs and owners a fun way to connect. The Smashing Boxes team quickly developed the Dognition application using Ruby on Rails and built its static site using Drupal. Dognition is a beautiful, flexible, and highly customizable application .
Stealz is a Triangle startup that wants to help businesses move away from the LivingSocial and Groupon deal-of-the-day model. With the help of Smashing Boxes, Stealz developed a mobile application for iOS and Android, with a Ruby on Rails back-end, that allows small businesses to promote deals through an innovative loyalty program. Once users download the app, they will be able to search for nearby businesses that are registered with Stealz. The business’ Stealz page lists possible rewards for the user and the number of points required for each reward. Users gain points by scanning QR codes at participating businesses and sharing photos via Facebook and Twitter.
Uhuru Child is a U.S. based non-profit with the goal of creating businesses and building schools for the Kenyan people. Many Kenyans are currently living in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1 a day. By assessing the specific needs of communities, Uhuru Child is able to create tailored social development programs, build schools, and start businesses whose additional profits support self-sustaining secondary schools. Comedy Fights Malaria iPad application is a fun twist on the favorite childhood game of Memory. Match faces of celebrities and compete with all of your friends for the best score in the Game Center. After every round, players are treated to spots created by celebrity supporters in order to promote awareness for Malaria No More's mission. By re-purposing content they had on hand, the Comedy Fights Malaria Memory Game allowed Malaria No More to engage people in a new way of discussing the disease. Comedy Fights Malaria shows that the disease is no laughing matter—every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies from malaria—but humor can keep malaria in the spotlight and in the conversation. The result is always amusing, often absurd, and sometimes downright bizarre messages from a broad range of stars.
ALMA is a non profit group that was founded by African heads of state and government to work together to end Malaria related deaths by 2015. We are fortunate to work with such a worthy cause, especially one with a keen sense of how technology can assist in their journey and their mission. We designed and developed an iPad application for members of ALMA to engage, interact, and communicate with their counterparts in African nations. The data in the app is driven by a Ruby on Rails web application and API. The Rails back-end gives our client the ability to constantly stream new and dynamic content via the web.
Digital Dentistry provides on-demand streaming services for dental training. Smashing Boxes developed a Ruby on Rails web application that syncs with Brightcove to deliver a rich video-on-demand experience. Dentists can use Digital Dentistry to stay up-to-speed on the latest in technology and procedures without attending conferences or even firing up the DVD player.
When East Durham Children's Initiative approached Smashing Boxes about their brand identity and their new web site, we jumped at the opportunity. It's not often you get to help a non-profit brand itself, so we dove in all the way to understanding their brand, their audience and their message. EDCI is committed to helping kids in East Durham get ready for college or a career. The website is managed by WordPress, our favorite easy to use CMS for marketing and branding websites.
CBC New Media Group needed us to turn their designs into an app for the iPhone and Android markets. We worked with their back end development team's API to make the core function of the apps, where users can scan QR codes around town, earn points and redeem those points for great prizes. Our challenge was tapping into multiple devices hardware to turn their camera into a QR reader. The app is currently in the App Store and Android Marketplace.
INRFood is a web and mobile application that allows users to scan any product's bar code, and it tells you what those ingredients really are. Red 40? Did you know that it comes from petroleum? It also is built with advanced analytics which allows you to see and compare everything you are putting into your body. Today's food market is based more on chemistry then it is health. The web app is built using Ruby on Rails, with an API that pushes to a native iOS application.
American Tobacco Campus is one of the hottest development projects in the South East. When they decided to start marketing their next phase of development, Diamond View III, they approached Smashing Boxes to design their logo and their web site. We came up with a classy look and a simple, yet awesome, one page site.
An excited entrepreneur came to us with "the next big idea." We've all heard that before. But, now with this application in Beta he might be right. Tagget is a bookmarking app with a focus on social shopping. Create a list, tag products to it, share with specific friends or friend, and coordinate your shopping. We designed and developed the application using Ruby on Rails, and the bookmarklet is written in Javascript
Triangle Tutors approached Smashing Boxes to help redesign their brand and develop their web site that would scale with their business as they scale into new markets. We created them a custom CMS that allows them to blog, update content and manage and add new markets. Knowing that so many people are on the go, we created them a mobile version of their site as well, that is managed by the same CMS. Pretty cool.
Groundwork Labs is down the hall from us in the American Underground. They came to us and told us about their idea to create a new tech incubator, and asked us to be involved. We were pumped to work with their team to develop a logo that represented their vision, and to create a site that was fun, unique and easy to use as well. They loved what we came up with and we are happy to say that they are accepting applications now and will be launching their first program this spring. Groundwork Labs is comprised of members from NC IDEA, Capitol Broadcasting Company, and Joystick Labs.
Mike Noel, the fearless leader of Acorn Innovestments, wanted to have an identity on the web that reflected his company's personality, investing style, and that was also easy to use. We put together a design that is free of clutter, gets straight to the point, and speaks directly to his target audience. The site is built using Wordpress, a very user friendly CMS, which is our tool of choice for marketing and branding websites.
Currently, it can take an average of seven years for a cure to move from the research lab into a patients hands. The team at AlphaMed Press is trying to tackle this issue by providing a forum for clinical trialists to research previous trials with both positive and negative outcomes, a first for the industry. We have built a Ruby on Rails application with a simple interface that uses AJAX to help researchers get their research published. We hope to see this group change the world for the better!
Yo-Fi Wellness delivers video and audio content that can be customized by individual users to have a personal wellness experience. The country's brightest talent in the areas of fitness, yoga, nutrition and meditation provide the much-needed, trusted guidance to encourage and bring about healthy living. Features of the application include the unique calendar module that allows each user to schedule and plan to incorporate wellness into his or her life daily, a Ruby on Rails backend to manage and serve video content, built in analytics for the client to track the number of views each user has and on which video. Smashing Boxes provided web design, UI/UX design and development, in addition to building the application.

The mobile site leverages GPS technology built in to today's smartphone devices to provide users with an awesome "nearby deals" feature.
